History of the CAESAR 155 mm self-propelled gun
The CAESAR is an artillery piece produced by GIAT / NEXTER industries that equips the French army. It is armed with a 155mm, 52-caliber self-loading gun (measuring just over eight meters) and mounted on the rear platform of a Renault Sherpa truck. It's an intermediary piece of equipment that's very easy to deploy, but the disadvantage is that the five gunners (or at least three in an emergency) have little protection.
Developed by GIAT Industrie as a technological demonstrator, it was tested by the French army in 1998. In 2004, an order was placed with GIAT for the construction of 72 self-propelled guns, considering this option to be more economical than the AuF2 modernization program. In July 2008, the French army took delivery of the first CAESAR system. The first operational deployment was in Afghanistan in 2009, and in January 2011 5 CAESARs were sent to southern Lebanon as part of the UNIFIL force, to replace the AUF1s. Air-transportable by Hercules C-130H - 18-round on-board ammunition - Range: 5 to 38 Km - Rate of fire: 6/8 rounds/min.
