History of the 75 mm pak 40 anti-tank gun

In 1942, the Austrian firm Steyr designed this veritable Eastern Front all-rounder, which could get through snow and rasputiza (mud) thanks to its caterpillar tracks. A ride height of 55 cm combined with the tracks gave the RSO its all-terrain capabilities. The undercarriage, deliberately simplified, made this Spartan vehicle very versatile and uncomfortable.

Mainly used for towing artillery: 50, 75 and 88 mm anti-tank guns (PaK.), light howitzers... The RSO could also carry a wide variety of loads on its platform. Within three years, more than 28,000 RSOs were produced by Steyr, Klockner-Deutz-Magirus, Wanderer and others. Production of the 01 version began in 1942, with the final 03 version in 1944.
