283 units of the L6/40 light tank rolled out the Fiat factories between February 1941 and 1943. This 6.8 tonnes tank was powered by a 70 hp, 4 cyl. SPD 18D gasoline motor. The maximum speed was 42 km/h and the range 200 km. The vehicle was 3.78 m long and 1.92 m wide.
The crew of two was shielded by 6 to 30 mm thick steel plates. One coaxial 8 mm M38 Breda machine-gun with 1,560 cartridges supplemented the main weapon: a 20 mm M35 Breda cannon for which 296 shells were carried inboard.
The L6/40 first saw combat in late 1941 in North Africa for the benefit of the Axis forces. Its career went on in USSR for the rush to the East and in the Balkan area against the Yugoslav opponent. The main role of this light-tank was reconnaissance. When entering service this tank was already obsolete and always had to fight against more potent enemy materiel.
