In Germany in 1943, Alkett, Krupp and Mercedes-Benz created the "Minenräumer". This mine-clearing vehicle weighed 50 tonnes and measured 6.3 m long, 3.2 m wide and 2.9 high. This front-wheel drive vehicle had three plain-steel wheels. A steering wheel operated a very simple steering gear that pulled chains linked to the rear wheel.
The crew was shielded by 10 to 40 mm thick steel plates, the floor was 60 mm thick A Panzer I Ausf. B that mounted two 7.92 mm Rheinmetall MG 34 machine-guns with 2,250 cartridges provided the theoretical self-defence capability of this heavy mine-clearer.
The heavy still runners of the wheels had permanent ground contact and detonated any mine. Tactically this slow and huge AFV was the perfect target for any Soviet gunner. Eventually the mine clearing missions were devoted to normal tanks fitted with the necessary gears.
