History of the Russian GAZ-AA light truck
In 1929, following an agreement between Ford and the Soviet authorities, a huge automobile factory was built in 17 months in Nizhny Novgorod: ГАЗ (GAZ: Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod). From 1932, the AA truck was distributed, mass production was decided in 1938, then ceased in 1950. More than a million examples were delivered to the Red Army.
This copy of the Ford AA was powered by a 40 hp, 4-cylinder GAZ gasoline engine, at a maximum speed of 70 km/h. With its 40 liters of fuel, 195 km could be driven. The vehicle's payload of 1.5 tonnes earned it the nickname "Polutorka" (1 and a half).
The GAZ-AA was the emblematic truck of the Red Army, making a major logistical contribution to victory. Thus, in 1941, the GAZ-AA traveled 40 million km on the “Road of Life”, transported, among other things, 271,000 tons of food, 23,000 tons of coal, 32,000 tons of weapons and ammunition and 360,000 tons of goods.
