History of the Staghound Mk.III QF 75 mm
Produced in total 2844 units, from October 1942 to December 1943, the Chevrolet T17E1 machine gun cars intended for the US Army were entirely put into the service of the British troops. This armored vehicle (max: 44mm) weighing 13.7 tonnes traveled at a maximum of 89 km/h thanks to two GMC 270, 6-cylinder in-line, petrol, water-cooled, 97 hp engines each.
The 423 liters of fuel carried allowed 720 km of autonomy.
In 1944, the English decided that the T17E1 Staghound was a heavy armored car capable of accepting superior armament. After several tests, in 1945, they introduced the Staghound Mk.III equipped with the Crusader Mk.III turret armed with a 75mm cannon and a 7.92mm Besa coaxial, which had become obsolete as a tank.
Standardized as a heavy reconnaissance armored vehicle, the Staghound Mk.III was produced in small numbers for WW II. After the war, only Denmark and Lebanon used this armored vehicle until the 1960s.
