History of the MK.VII Tetrarch airborne light tank

Designed by Vickers-Armstrong, 177 examples of this light tank were produced from November 1940 to 1941. A 165 hp Meadows MAT engine propelled this 7.6 ton machine to a maximum of 64 km/h and the 205 liters of gasoline allowed a maximum autonomy of 225 km.

The three tankers were at best protected by 16 mm of steel. A coaxial Besa machine gun with 2025 rounds of 7.92mm supplemented the 2-pounder QFSA gun loaded with 50 rounds. The 40 mm shell weighed 1.08 kg, its initial speed was 792 m/s.

The Tetrarch served in Africa with the 8th Army and during the capture of Madagascar on Tuesday May 5, 1942. Around twenty Tetrarchs were supplied to the USSR. It was not until June 1944 that the Tetrarch was used in accordance with its G.A.L. glider airborne tank design. 49 Hamilcar during Overlord in Normandy with the 6th Airborne Division.
