History of the Amtrack LVT 2
C450 LVT(A) (2) were produced from 1943 to 1944 by Roebling and Ford. This 14.4 ton “Landing Vehicle Tracked (Armoured)” was powered by a 250 hp Wright W670 gasoline engine. Maximum speeds of 40 km/h on road and 5.3 knots on water could be reached; the maximum road range was 240 km.
The three crew members were at best protected by 13 mm of steel. A 12.7 mm Browning M2HB machine gun and three 7.62 mm Browning M1919A4 machine guns allowed the men of the LVT (A) (2) to return fire. Nicknamed “Water Buffalo”, this machine carried 18 fully equipped men or a payload of 2600 kg. The baptism of fire of the LVT (A) (2) took place on Tuesday December 14, 1943 in the Bismark archipelago, during the capture of the island of Arawe.
