History of the British heavy tank Mk.IV female
Between May 1917 and the end of the conflict, 595 Mk. IV Female tanks were produced. A 125 hp gasoline engine propelled this 27-ton tank at 5.6 km/h, the range reached 56 km.
The eight crewmen were at best protected by 14 mm of steel. 6 7.7 mm Lewis machine guns (550 rounds/min, v0: 750 m/s), supplied with 10,000 rounds, constituted the offensive capabilities of the Mk. IV Female.
The Mark IV tank's first engagement took place in September 1917 during the Battle of Fleurs. The validity of the concept of the rhomboidal tank was excellently put into practice by the Mk. IV which gave the allies a valuable tactical advantage in breaking through enemy lines.
