History of the Caesar 155 mm self-propelled gun
The CAESAR is an artillery piece produced by GIAT / NEXTER industries which equips the French army. It is armed with a 155mm 52 caliber self-loading cannon (which measures a little over eight meters) and installed on the rear platform of a Renault Sherpa truck.
It is an intermediate material with great ease of projection but the disadvantage is that the five gunners (or three minimum in an emergency) are poorly protected. Developed by GIAT industry as a technological demonstrator, it was tested by the French army in 1998.
In 2004 an order was placed with GIAT for the construction of 72 self-propelled guns considering this option more economical than the AuF2 modernization program. In July 2008, the French army received the first CAESAR system. The first operational deployment was in Afghanistan in 2009 and in January 2011 5 CAESARs were sent to southern Lebanon within UNIFIL, in order to replace the AUF1.
Air transportable by Hercule C-130H - 18 rounds on-board ammunition - Range: 5 to 38 km - Rate: 6/8 rounds/min.
