History of the FCM-36 light tank
Only 100 FCM 36 light tanks were produced by the "Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée" between 1938 and 1939, as the price was too high. This 13-ton vehicle was powered by a 105 hp Berliet-Ricardo diesel engine, enabling a speed of 24 km/h.
A tank commander and driver sat on board, protected by up to 40 mm of welded armor. The main armament, a 37 mm SA 18 cannon obsolete in the late 1930s, was complemented by a Chatellrault M1931 7.5 mm machine gun.
The 4th and 7th Tank Battalions were equipped with FCM 36s, in time to fight from May to the defeat of June 1940. The German occupiers benefited from the capture of some fifty examples, which returned to service under new colors.
