History of the German heavy mortar 12 cm Granatwerfer 42 with trailers
German armies seized enormous quantities of weapons during the fighting in the USSR. Among this equipment was the excellent Soviet PM 38 120mm mortar. After examination and evaluation, this weapon, renamed “Gr. W. 378 (r)”, entered into service with the Wehrmacht. An exact copy began to be produced in Germany in 1942 under the name “120mm Gr. W. 42” or “GranatWerfer 42”.
The mortar weighed 285kg in the firing position, in the road position the weight of the assembly reached 600kg. The 15.8kg “Wurfgranate 42” high-impact shell could be fired up to 6km. 20 shells were carried in the ammunition box. The 120 accepted German and Soviet shells indiscriminately. To make matters worse, this weapon with its remarkable performance was simple, quick and inexpensive to produce.
