History of the Hotchkiss H-39 light tank

From 1939 to 1940, 540 Model 39 light tanks rolled off the Hotchkiss assembly lines. Powered by a 1938 Hotchkiss engine, 6 cylinders of 120hp, the 12 tons of the H-39 traveled at 36 km/h. The 210 liters of gasoline allowed a range of at best 150 km.

A tank commander and a driver took place on board, protected by no more than 45 mm of bolted armor. A 7.5 mm Chatellrault M1931 machine gun supplied with 2400 rounds completed the main armament, the 37 mm SA 18 (v0: 380 m/s) with 100 shells.

The H-39, equipped in many Cuirassier units, was opposed to the enemy advance during the Blitzkrieg of 1940. After the Armistice of June 1940, the German occupiers recycled many examples, which returned to service under new colors until 1945.
