History of the Hotchkiss H39 105 mm leFH18(Sf) Auf GW
Many quality French materials were recovered by the German occupiers, after the armistice of Saturday June 22, 1940. In 1942, 48 Hotchkiss H-39 light tanks were recycled into self-propelled artillery, with an increase in mass of 500 kg only. Thus, the 1938 Hotchkiss engine, 6 cylinders of 120 hp took the 12.5 tonnes of the vehicle to 36 km/h. The 210 liters of gasoline allowed a range of at best 150 km.
The 4 crew members were at best protected by 34 mm of steel. A 7.92 mm Rheinmetall MG 34 machine gun with 600 rounds complemented the excellent light Model 18 M 105 mm L/31 howitzer with muzzle brake. The 14.97 kg shell exited the tube at a speed of 540 m/s, the maximum range being 12,200 m. The maximum rate of fire of this weapon, produced by Rheinmetall-Borsig AG, reached 7 rounds per minute.
These self-propelled howitzers underwent the test of fire in 1944 in France, on behalf of the 21st Armored Division, during the Battle of Normandy.
