History of the Italian L6/40 light tank
283 examples of the L6/40 light tank left Fiat factories from February 1941 to 1943. The SPD 18D, 4-cylinder, 70 hp gasoline engine took the 6.8 tons of this tank to 42 km/h. The range was 200 km. The vehicle measured 3.78 m long and 1.92 m wide.
From 6 to 30 mm of steel protected the two tankers. A coaxial 8 mm Breda M38 machine gun with 1560 rounds completed the tank's main armament: a 20 mm Breda M35 cannon supplied with 296 rounds.
The L6/40 began its career in North Africa at the end of 1941 for the Axis forces, then in the USSR during the conquest in the East and finally, in the Balkans against the Yugoslav forces. This light tank served as a reconnaissance vehicle and at the time of its appearance was already obsolete in the face of significantly more efficient enemy equipment.
