History of the Ka-Mi type 2 amphibious tank

184 Type 2 Ka-Mi amphibious tanks were produced by Mitsubishi Jukogyo Kabushiki Kaisha (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) from 1942. This low number is due to the complexity of this almost entirely “handmade” tank. This 11.3 ton vehicle was powered by a Mitsubishi NVD 6120, 6-cylinder 121 hp diesel engine, so 37 km/h on the road was possible and more than 5 knots on the water.

240 liters of diesel allowed a range of 200 km on the road and 80 nautical miles on the water. The two steel pontoons with partitioned construction were easily released from inside the tank. The 5 to 6 tankers were at best protected by 13 mm of steel. Two 7.7 mm Type 97 machine guns with 3,500 rounds complemented the 37 mm Type 1 L/45.9 cannon supplied with 132 rounds. The initial speed of the shell was 800 m/s, 25 mm of steel were pierced at 1000 m.

This amphibious was intended for the elite units “Tokubetsu Rikusentai”, the Special Naval Landing Force of the Imperial Japanese Navy. This derivative of the Type 95 Ha-Go light tank was used defensively from entrenched positions at the end of the war.
