Panzer 4 history simplified
Under the project name "Wagen 1462", Krupp proposed to the Werhmacht's Panzer Kommission an ultimate evolution of the Panzer IV. The 300 hp Maybach HL 120 TRM petrol engine was to power the 28+ ton medium tank. Thicker armour significantly increased the weight of the machine.
The 5-man crew would have been protected by no more than 80 mm of steel. An all-new, simplified hexagonal turret, with thicker, sloping armour, was to house the 75mm KwK 40 L/48 cannon, fired at 87 rounds. Two Rheinmetall MG 34 7.92 mm machine guns with 3150 rounds of ammunition would have completed the vehicle's armament.
This reinforced Pz.IV didn't get any further than the drawing board, as the project was abandoned in mid-1944 in view of the growing need for equipment, and priority was given to the mass production of existing machines.
