History of Panzerjäger I Ausf.B
This is the first in a long series of tank chassis and gun conversions for the Wehrmacht. The Sd. Kfz. 101 is the synthesis of the Panzer I version B and the Czech Skoda 47 mm anti-tank gun. By September 1939, 202 Panzerjäger 1s had been built. The vehicle's weight increased to 6.4 tons, but the small 100 hp Maybach NL 38 TR engine enabled it to reach 40 km/h, with a range of 140 km.
The 3-man crew was equipped with the 4.7 cm PaK 36 (t) 86-round cannon (76 armor-piercing and 10 shattering). With a muzzle velocity of 775 m/s and a range of 1,500 m, the weapon's performance was superior to anything the Germans were fielding before 1940.
Nicknamed the "Ente" or duck, this first-generation tank fighter served in the West until June 1940, then in North Africa and on the Eastern Front until the end of 1943.
