History of Panzerjäger Sd.Kfz.184 Tiger Porsche Elefant
90 examples of this self-propelled anti-tank vehicle were produced by "Nibelungen Werke" between April and May 1943. The 65-tonne vehicle was powered at best 20 km/h by two Maybach HL-120 TRM engines, each rated at 320 hp. The frontal steel armor was 200 mm thick.
The Elefant was manned by six men. In 1943, the 88 mm PaK 43/2 L/71 (weight 2,200 kg), supplied with 50 shells, was unstoppable. Panzer Granaten 40/43 (muzzle velocity: 1130 m/s, tungsten core) fired through more than 190 mm of armour at 1000 m. Two MG 34 7.92 mm machine guns with 600 rounds of ammunition completed the armament.
The Sd. Kfz. 184's baptism of fire came in July 1943, at Kursk in the USSR, with Panzerjäger-Abteilungen 653 and 654. L'Elefant disappeared on May 8, 1945.
