History of the Soviet car scout BRDM-2
This amphibious armored reconnaissance vehicle is the descendant of the BRDM-1. It was developed in the early 1960s. It is an all-wheel-drive vehicle, powered by a 140 hp V-8 engine. The BRDM-2's top speed is 100 km/h. The thickest armor - 14 mm - is located at the front, otherwise the body is made of 7 mm-thick sheet steel. Total operating weight is 7 tonnes. The BRDM-2 is manned by four men.
The frying pan-shaped turret houses two machine guns: a 7.62 mm and a 14.5 mm, supplied with 2,000 and 500 rounds respectively. The 14.5 mm bullet pierces 30 mm of armour at 500 m. In addition, the BRDM-2 carries an infrared projector, infrared lighting and NBC protection package. This vehicle is in service with many armies around the world: Russia, Poland, Syria, Egypt, Bulgaria, Romania... The BRDM-2 has taken part in numerous battles during regional conflicts: Viet-Nam, the Yom Kippur War, the Iran-Iraq War, to name but three.
