History of the BTR-70 Soviet vehicle

The BTR-70 is an armored, eight-wheel-drive, amphibious personnel carrier produced from 1974 onwards. It entered service in the USSR in 1978. Two ZMZ-4905, 8-cylinder, 120 hp gasoline engines enable the 11.5-ton welded-steel BTR-70 to reach speeds of 80 km/h on the road and 5.5 knots on the water. With its 350 liters of fuel, the BTR-70 can travel 450 km.

Eight fully-equipped men sit in the middle of the vehicle. The driver and skipper are equipped with an infrared night vision system. Armament is grouped in a turret: a 14.5 mm KPV heavy machine gun with 500 rounds and a 7.62 mm PKT (Plulemyot Kalashnikov Tank) machine gun (2,000 rounds).

The BTR-70 has seen combat in Asia and Africa, and has been produced in numerous variants for a wide range of uses, equipping armies around the world.
