History of the T17E1 Staghound self-propelled reconnaissance gun

From October 1942 to December 1943, a total of 2,844 Chevrolet T17E1 machine-gun cars were produced for the US Army, all of which were used by British troops. This armored vehicle (max: 44mm) weighed 13.7 tons and reached a maximum speed of 89 km/h thanks to two GMC 270 in-line 6-cylinder gasoline engines, water-cooled and rated at 97 hp each. The 423 liters of fuel carried allowed a range of 720 km.

The five-man crew was equipped with a 37 mm M6 cannon, supplied with 103 shells, and two 7.62 mm Browning machine guns (coaxial and box) with 5250 rounds of ammunition.

In the second half of the Second World War, British, Canadian, New Zealand, Indian and Belgian forces began using T17E1s in continental Europe and India in 1943. The Staghound's career continued under many flags.
