History of the VBCI 8x8 armored infantry fighting vehicle
Production by GIAT Industries and Renault VI of the Véhicule Blindé de Combat d'Infanterie is due to start in 2006, with an initial batch of 700 units. A 550 hp diesel engine should enable this 25.6-tonne, 8-wheel-drive vehicle to travel at speeds of over 100 km/h.
The vehicle is crewed by two men and carries 9 fully-equipped soldiers. The single-seat Dragar turret carries a 25 mm GIAT M811 cannon (max. rate of fire: 400 cpm), equipped with 150 shells, a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun and a GALIX system. A laser illuminator and thermal camera ensure optimum weapon aiming.
Among other concepts, this new combat vehicle integrates air mobility (A400M-compatible size), modularity and digital combat management (FELIN system).
