History of the VBCI VPC 8x8 command vehicle
Production by GIAT Industries and Renault VI of the Armored Infantry Combat Vehicle is due to start in 2006 for a first batch of 700 units. A 550 hp diesel engine should allow this 8-wheel drive machine weighing 25.6 tonnes to travel at more than 100 km/h.
Two crewmen lead this vehicle which carries 9 fully equipped soldiers. The Dragar single-seat turret carries a 25 mm GIAT M811 cannon (maximum rate of fire: 400 cpm), equipped with 150 shells, a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun and a GALIX system. A laser illuminator and a thermal camera ensure optimal weapon aiming.
This new combat vehicle integrates, among other concepts, aeromobility (A400M compatible template), modularity and finally digital combat management (FELIN system). The VPC version is armed with a 12.7 mm tele-operated cupola, it is equipped with two regimental information system (RIS) stations and two PR4G radios.
