History of the VBMR Griffon Scorpion program

The VBMR (véhicule blindé multi-rôles) is the French army's replacement for the armored front vehicle. It is known as the Griffon. The French army has been preparing to replace the VAB since the early 2000s. To this end, it plans to purchase 2,080 units of the VBMR, according to the target set in the 2020 Defense White Paper. The Ministry of Defense has entrusted its development to Nexter, Thales and ARQUUS (formerly Renault Trucks Défense).

In early 2016, it was confirmed that the 126th Infantry Regiment would be the first regiment to be equipped with the VBMR Griffon, starting in 2021. The vehicle will be based on a 6×6 architecture, and will be able to carry a pilot, a gunner and 9 combatants. The purchase of this vehicle is part of the Scorpion program, designed to modernize the army's cavalry, with the modernization of Leclerc tanks, the replacement of VABs by VBMRs, and the replacement of ERC-90 Sagaie and AMX-10 RC by EBRCs.
