History of the 105 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage M7 Priest based on Tamiya
Following the successful installation of 105 mm howitzers on semi-tracked vehicles, the US Army decided to produce a fully tracked version in 1941. The M7 was crewed by 7 men. The M7 carried 69 105 mm shells, complemented by a .50-calibre (12.7 mm) machine gun mounted on a circular cupola.
A total of 3,314 M7s were produced between April 1942 and 1944, while 826 M7B1s were produced between March 1944 and February 1945. Americans used the M7 on all fronts: North Africa, Italy, Western Europe and the Pacific. The Marines used it extensively in Okinawa, especially as a troop transport (13 men were seated on board).
The M7 offered appreciable mobility to the 105mm field gun. It was the German Wespe's counterpart in the armored artillery category. British troops were equipped with M7s. The first 90 were sent to Egypt in 1942, just before the start of the Second Battle of El Alamein. It was the British who gave the M7 its nickname of "Priest", in reference to its pulpit-like dome. The M7 was used in North Africa and Italy by the British VIIIth Army.
