History of the M60 A2 Starship Solido-based tank
The M60A2 is a variant of the M60 Patton tank and was developed as support for units using the M60A1. It was nicknamed Starship because of its sophisticated technology and the futuristic shape of its turret. Entered service with the American army in 1972, 526 units were built. The M60A2 incorporates a new turret with a profile reduced by 40% compared to the turret of the M60A1 tank. The turret is armed with the 152 mm M162 rifled missile launcher.
It is capable of firing MGM-51 Shillelagh anti-tank missiles as well as conventional shells. The use of the missile was to increase the firing distance as well as the destructive capacity thanks to its caliber of 152 mm. However this tank was a failure and withdrawn from service in 1981. Their chassis was used for the M60A3 tank, the M728 engineer vehicle and the AVLB bridge launcher.
