History of the Jagdpanzer 38(t) Hetzer
In March 1943, Heinz Guderian suggested the replacement of all the old models of Panzerjägers with open superstructure and light armor which served as an interim solution with an entirely new breed of tank destroyers better protected by thicker armor and especially a completely armored structure more capable of the realities of combat. It was at this time that the new tank destroyer was definitively named Jagdpanzer 38 (t) Hetzer (Stalker) and received its registration number Sd.Kfz.138/2.
A total of 2584 examples, which is enormous given German capabilities, were produced in three series until the end of the war. The silhouette of the Hetzer was really low thanks to a superstructure with very inclined (welded) walls. The armor was 60 mm in front, 8 mm on the roof and rear, and 20 mm on the sides. Short 5 mm armored skirts will also be installed on the sides. The Hetzer equipped the tank destroyer units (Panzerjäger Abteilung/Kompanie) of the infantry divisions, Panzergrenadiers and various independent units. The Hetzer equipped all types of Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS units in a total of 10 divisions.
But they will also be placed in a division of the Luftwaffe, in two divisions of the Kriegsmarine, in 3 divisions of the RAD and ROA (Russian volunteers of the Heer). They will scour all the battlefields on all fronts (from 1944). They were notably used extensively during the offensive in the Belgian Ardennes during the winter of 1944-1945.
