History of the Panzerjager Marder III Ausf.H PaK40 based on Tamiya
The Marder III tank fighter based on the Pz.Kpfw 38(t) was produced in two models: the Marder III Ausf.H and the Marder III Ausf.M.
The Marder III Ausf.H was based on the chassis of the Panzerkampfwagen 38(t) Ausf.H and designated 7.5 cm PaK40/3 Ausf Pz.Kpfw 38(t) Ausf.H or Panzerjäger 38(t) mit 7.5 cm PaK40/3 Ausf.H.
It is armed with the PaK 40/3 L/46 75 mm anti-tank gun.
The Marder III Ausf.H was crewed by 4 men: the pilot in the forward cockpit, the commanding officer, and two gunners in the center combat station. The Marder III's engine was always installed in a rear engine compartment. The combat compartment was open at the top and rear, and housed the 75 mm cannon with a large shield protecting the front and sides. The Marder III Ausf.H carried 38 75 mm projectiles only.
The 75 mm Pak 40/3, which had a limited lateral field of fire, could be rotated 30 degrees to either side. Armament was completed by a 7.92 mm MG 37(t) machine gun mounted at the front of the body and a 7.92 mm MG 34/42 machine gun fired from the combat compartment. The Marder III Ausf.H's armor varied from 8 to 50 mm. BMM built 243 Marder III Ausf.Hs between November 1942 and April 1943, followed by 175 converted Pz.Kpfw 38(t)s in 1943. The Marder III Ausf.H was transferred to the Panzerjäger Abteilungen at the end of 1942.
