History of the Russian IS-2 heavy tank
Between April 1944 and June 1945, 3,475 IS-2 heavy tanks came out of the Kirovskiy factories in Chelyabinsk (ChKZ), the famous “Tankograd”. The 46.2-ton Iosif Stalin 2 was powered by a 600 hp V-2-IS V-12 diesel engine. 520 (internal) + 270 (external) liters of diesel allowed a range of 230 km; the maximum speed was 37 km/h.
The 4 tankers were at best protected by 120 mm of steel. The main armament: a 122 mm D-25T L/43 cannon equipped with 28 shells was supplemented by two 7.62 mm Degtjarev Tankovyi (DT) machine guns housed in a turret (coaxial and rear sector) with 2330 cartridges and finally a 12.7 mm AA heavy machine gun Degtyarev-Shpagin Krupnocalibernyj (DShK) fed at 945 rounds -600 rounds/min, v0: 850 m/s.
This heavy tank represented an excellent synthesis between protection, mobility and firepower, the major drawback was the somewhat low rate of fire due to the 122 mm ammunition in two parts. The ИС-2 was engaged in combat in the spring of 44, its versatility allowed it to face any opponent, it ended the war in Berlin
