History of Acmat VT-4

The VLTP NP is primarily intended to replace the P4 light all-terrain vehicle dating from the 1980s, of which over 500 are withdrawn from service each year. It will be used for the rapid movement of military personnel, with or without Félin equipment, on national territory and in stabilized theaters of external operations. With a gross vehicle weight of less than 3.5 tonnes, it offers a payload of 900 kg and can transport up to 5 soldiers and their equipment over all types of terrain. The VLTP is a Ford Everest 4x4 station wagon from the manufacturer's Commercial range.

It meets the specifications for a vehicle that can be easily air-transported, has proven cross-country capabilities, is adapted to our roads, is relatively inexpensive, and meets the needs of our soldiers who are fed up with the antediluvian P4. The Army has considered the case of the Everest, listed in the UGAP, but not marketed in Europe: a vehicle dedicated to Africa or South-East Asia, of the same size as in Europe, but with incredible capabilities for the price. The VLTP-P, a variant protected against small-calibre weapons fire, will be used as a liaison vehicle on OPEX, but its use on the front line does not appear to be planned. Some people are already talking about the underpowered VLTP-P, which is heavier than the basic VLTP, for which the power-to-weight ratio with its 2.2 turbo-diesel is already judged to be just right.
